Jeff Hutchinson is a San Francisco native and classically trained singer who started music at a young age. As a boy he sang with the San Francisco Boys Chorus, including performances with the San Francisco Symphony and San Francisco Opera.
His midlife was dedicated to a technology career and raising a family. Now in retirement, he has returned to his musical roots by fronting rock bands around the Bay Area across diverse genres including blues, rock, progressive, and alternative.
Dan Black has been playing guitar since 1977, spending much of his time in bands that played classic rock favorites at local venues, parties, and community events. Over the years, he has enjoyed being part of groups that celebrated the music he grew up with, from blues-influenced rock to guitar-driven anthems of the ’70s.
This latest project takes a different turn, focusing on alternative ’80s rock — a welcome change that brings new sounds, fresh challenges, and a different kind of energy to the music. It’s a style that lets him explore new tones and textures while still connecting with audiences who love nostalgic, upbeat, and danceable songs.
He always aims to complement the band’s overall sound and style, adding guitar parts that fit naturally with each song rather than standing out on their own. As lead guitarist and backing vocalist, Dan values the camaraderie of playing with friends, sharing familiar tunes with the audience, and helping create a laid-back, fun atmosphere where everyone can enjoy the music together.
David Spitz has been playing piano since the mid-1970s, beginning with classical training at the Music Conservatory of Westchester outside NYC. While he appreciated the foundation, his real passion emerged when he started jamming with friends.
At 15, he got his first electric keyboard — the Fender Rhodes, a beast of an instrument — and dove headfirst into a Grateful Dead cover band during high school. After moving to California, David continued playing intermittently until rediscovering his love for the keys about ten years ago, especially after getting his hands on the incredible Nord Stage 3.
While he enjoys playing all genres, he’s particularly drawn to recreating the rich sounds, rhythms, and grooves of ’70s and ’80s rock. Playing these classic songs with Cover Story has been both musically rewarding and an absolute blast.
Neal has been holding it down with his Ernie Ball Musicman. His phrasing and melodic bass lines are captivating.
He also plays with JIMI — a Jimmy Hendrix cover band.
Aaron has been behind the kit since age 12 and was gigging professionally with his father’s band by 14. Over the years, he’s played in a wide range of groups spanning blues, funk, R&B, classic rock, and ’80s hits — bringing the beat to weddings, festivals, private events, and everything in between.
These days, he’s found his groove with Cover Story and is having an absolute blast.
Michael is from a musical family where his father was an operatic singer and both parents enjoyed opera and musicals like West Side Story and The Sound of Music. At an early age, he discovered the Beatles and Kinks vinyl of his older brother and sister. Artists like Cat Stevens and Springsteen were favorites of another sister, while another brother introduced him to the music of The Police and Alan Parsons Project.
A child of the ’70s, he is heavily influenced by the great music of that decade and early MTV ’80s rock. A self-taught guitarist, his influences are Hendrix, Clapton, Santana, Blackmore, Page, and Howe, while his playing style is Weir, Petty, Stanley, Lennon, Johnston, and Kath.
His recent projects include vocals and guitar for local bands DejaVu Again and The BuzZ!
